The Pixel Fold is set to launch in May..

As the launch date approaches, the narrative of Google's first foldable phone and its pricing becomes increasingly perplexing. On Twitter, leaker Jon Prosser said that the Pixel Fold will be unveiled on May 10 - the first day of Google's annual I/O 2023 developer conference.

Preorders will begin the same day, according to Prosser, while carrier and retail partners will begin accepting registrations on May 30. Market release, on the other hand, is expected to begin on June 27th, about a month later. The current leak is consistent with prior WinFuture reports, which predicted a similar launch window for Google's widely anticipated foldable phone.

However, it's the rumoured pricing that's keeping eager fans up at night. According to Prosser, the Pixel Fold will start at $1,799, which is consistent with prior reports. However, another leaker claimed a few weeks ago that Google would sell its first foldable phone for between $1,300 and $1,500.

It should go without saying that you should be sceptical of these leaks. Google's track record with smartphone pricing has also been erratic in recent years. With the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series, the business shifted into high gear, launching flagships at prices that undercut Apple, Samsung, and even OnePlus.

It wouldn't be unexpected if Google pulled a similar prank with the Pixel Fold. Foldable phones, on the other hand, are a completely new ballgame in terms of engineering hurdles and component pricing. Even Samsung struggled for a few generations before reaching the proper mix between quality and pricing – the hardware is now safely priced about $1,800.

Google's Pixel ventures have been, at best, a mixed bag. Despite its allure, Pixel hardware will give buyers a pain for a few months until Google's team can narrow down the profusion of faults and optimise the entire kit with corrective software upgrades. This includes the most recent Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models.

Foldables just increase the level of complexity, which is why demanding a price tag as high as $1,800 will not benefit Google. According to the leaks so far, the Pixel Fold's primary distinguishing feature appears to be its sturdy frame, which appears to be inspired by the Oppo Find N2.

I have great hopes for the Pixel Fold, since it will not only usher Google into the foldable phone market, but will also serve as a model for the best Android experience on large-screen smartphones. In any case, the stakes are considerable, and Google will not want to fail on its first try. Setting the correct pricing — and not charging $1,800 for a folding phone — would be a wonderful place to start.
